Vintage 1925 Buescher 'Truetone' C-Melody Sax - gold lacquer
Great saxophone, good player, with case and ready to play !
This is an excellent professional C Melody Saxophone, manufactured around 1925 in the USA by Buescher. The sax is being sold in excellent working order, with (both) the original C-Melody mouthpiece and ligature, plus a more modern tenor sax mouthpiece - using standard tenor reeds. This set-up produces quite a contemporary blues/rock/jazz sound, very easy-blowing, and with the typical Buescher 'big sound', easily going from a whisper to a roar. The vintage lacquer is starting to turn to a deep copper'ish colour on parts of the bell, which, combined with the the rare 'amber rollers' on the little-finger keys, makes this a really distinctive looking horn.
On the back it reads: 158135 (and) LOW PITCH - TrueTone - with the normal Buescher patent numbers and 'bell' engraving, It has the traditional Buescher 'scalloped' fin both on the neck and bow of the sax, and round mother-of-pearl G# key, with similar pearl on the main action keys. The instrument is (modern standard) Low Pitch, A=440, and the tuning has been checked satisfactorily against other modern instruments and an electronic tuner.

I've recorded a very basic 'doodling' sound sample on the sax ( direct into the PC mic - so not exactly 'hi-fi' ), using my own mouthpiece. To hear this, please Click Here. It may take a minute or so to download the full file over non-broadband connections. Hear the lyrical top, plus the beefy tenor'ish bottom, alto and tenor in one horn !

This sax is in good working and playing order (as you've heard) Leather pads were all renewed less than six months ago, and I believe that all the original Buescher pads 'snaps' are still in place - cork, felt and springs were also replaced as needed. I've looked hard, and can't find any dents or dints. As with all 80 year old well-played instruments, it has some lacquer loss mostly at the rear of the sax, and a couple of small neat solder repairs showing. As the re-soldering was on the base of a couple of mounting pillars, I suspect that this was done during a refurb to loosen up seized threads - not unusual for a 20's sax probably stored for a while- rather than as a result of any damage.

Overall the standard of the dark gold vintage lacquer finish is excellent for an instrument of this age, with just expected wear. Supplied with a period C-Mel case in functional condition - with purple velvet lining and leather handle - plus the original (C-Melody) and newer (Tenor) mouthpiece(s), a small selection of C-Melody and tenor reeds, tube of cork grease, and new substantial strap. All you need to play !
